Resources
improv
This will slowly build out and probably get more categorized, but for now, while things are getting started, here are some things to get you started!
The very basics:
Improvising Better (Jimmy Carrane and Liz Allen) – for grounded, accepting, truly in-the-moment improv, the kind that will draw an introvert in 🙂
Upright Citizens Brigade Comedy Improvisation Manual – useful for anyone as a kind of all-around improv bible, with a lot more structure and examples. Good for introductory self-study.
Improvise: Scene From the Inside Out (Mick Napier) – more intellectual, constructive look at improv
Mentions:
Improvisation at the Speed of Life (“The TJ and Dave Book”)
Truth in Comedy (Halpern, Close, Johnson)
Improvising Now (Rob Norman)
The Backline (Rob Norman and Adam Cawley) – deep dives into improv topics and aspects of play. If any mini-cast topics here interest you, head over there for the full, in-depth chat!
Hello From the Magic Tavern – totally engaging, well-produced whimsical hilarity
Off Book: The Improvised Musical – just what you’d think! A classic episode
Improvised Star Trek – appropriate length for improv, IMO. More highly produced.
Improv4Humans with Matt Besser – improvised shows with well known entertainers
Improv Nerd with Jimmy Carrane – interviews with well-known comedians, artists, improvisers
NOTE: these are comedians, actors, improvisers at the top of their game, years (decades?) in. This section is to help orient you toward improv styles, but know that it will only take a few introductory courses/levels in improv (maybe 3 months to a year depending on rigor of your courses) to begin to practice and participate in these higher level forms. Many learn the Armando and Harold somewhere around their 4th or 5th course (around 100 hours of practice).
Short Form:
Any episode of Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Long form:
Armando-esque: ASSSCAT with Upright Citizens Brigade (you will likely recognize these players!)
The “perfect” Harold (by The Reckoning)
Classic duo clip (TJ and Dave):
Musical Improv (Tara and Rance, Here)
Improvised Shakespeare Company
NY Comedy – archive of UCB shows
Email us, of course! Let’s make you a jam or find you a group, at any level.
Zoomprov Breaks with Unscripted in Nashville, TN. 30 minutes of play for any level.
Free improvised Shakespeare Jams (Impromptu Shakespeare, UK). Highly accessible play to anyone who has participated in improv jams or class before, though no Shakespearience required.
